Chargers Suffer 1st Loss of Season at 6th-Ranked Stormers

In a matchup of unbeatens, sixth-ranked Milwaukee Area Tech pulled away down the stretch to hand the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team its first loss the season, 80-68 on Saturday afternoon.
It was a single-digit game throughout until the Stormers (6-0) scored 13 of the final 19 points in the closing 3:23. Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) found Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) for a 3-pointer to pull Sandburg within 67-62, but MATC stretched its lead with a 9-0 run.
Young finished with a team-best 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting for the Chargers (6-1), and Gowan scored 15 while hitting 3 of 8 from 3-point range.
Sophomore James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) had 10 points and six rebounds for Sandburg, while freshman Jean Luc Wilson (East Moline, Ill./United Township) had eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.
The Stormers outrebounded Sandburg 50-39, including a 20-10 edge on the offensive glass. Justin Briley and Ayomide Ajiboye each led MATC with 22 points.
